Visit to the Shop

Miss Hanrahan’s 2nd/3rd class are learning about money in Maths and for a special treat Miss Griffin’s group went for a walk to the local shop.

Each child got 1 euro and were allowed to buy anything they wanted for that price. It was recommended that they buy some fruit but this suggestion was pushed aside when they saw sweets and crisps.

The children were extremely polite and asked questions like ” Could you please tell me how much this costs?” They estimated the price of their items and counted out their money and checked their change.

Each child was delighted with their purchase and walked safely back to school.

Here are some pictures of our little adventure!

Ceolchoirm Lá ‘le Pádraig

Bhí craic agus sport againn sa halla ar an 15ú Márta nuair a bhí Ceolchoirm Lá ‘le Pádraig ar siúl.  Mr. Stewart and Miss Lenihan’s ‘grúpa ceoil’ put on a great display with a variety of jigs, reels and hornpipes.  All classes from junior infants to 6th made musical contributions with a variety of traditional ‘amhráin Gaeilge’, and a few ‘pop-amhráin’ translated into Irish.

Rinne rang Miss Lenihan agus rang Miss Piper teaspáinteas rince (dance displays) ar an stáitse.  Rinne na ranganna eile rince céile ar an úrlár (on the floor).  Bhí na ranganna ag cleachtadh (practicing) na rincí ar feadh cúpla seachtain (for a few weeks) roimh an cheolchoirm.  And the end of the céile dance display, the parents, grandparents, brother and sisters were invited to join the boys and girls of Scoil Mochua in performing Balla Luimní (The Walls of Limerick).  Thaitin sé go mór linn!

These stations include dictionary work, phonics, boggle time, silent reading, free writing and our reader station. We do this for two hours every week with the help of Ms. Griffin and Mr. Stuart. We would like to say thank  you to these teachers as it would not be possible without them!

Trip to the Post Office

On Tuesday 13th March Miss Griffin’s 2nd Class group learned all about letter writing – how to structure, layout and sign a letter. The children then wrote letters to each other and we prepared the envelopes for posting. In maths we discussed how much a stamp costs and looked at how much change we would get from 1 euro. On Friday 16th we walked to the local Post Office. Each child greeted the post mistress, asked for a stamp, checked their change and put their stamp onto their envelope correctly. They then posted their letters. The children were very excited and discussed when they thought their letters would arrive back to the school.

Here are some pictures of our adventure.

Drama

We made up our own drama advertisments on the theme of water conservation. In groups we came up with our own ideas, we practiced and decided on costumes. Then we recorded our advertisements so that we can watch them. We had great fun!
